How do eye injuries happen at work? 

There are few injuries more painful than eye injuries, and these often occur in the workplace. In fact, research shows that as many as 2000 work-related eye injuries occur each day in the U.S. 

Fortunately, many of these injuries aren’t permanent, but this isn’t always the case. The reality is that serious eye injuries can cause permanent blindness. 

How do eye injuries occur at work? 

Injuries from debris 

In any work environment where there is movement, there’s a chance of debris flying around. This is especially the case in workshops, factories and construction sites, where power tools and machinery launch small particles of metal, dust and other substances into the air. 

When traveling at high speed, even the smallest of particles essentially become missiles, and these can do serious damage if they enter the eye. 

Reactions to chemicals 

Most workplaces contain some sort of chemicals in cleaning products. Some warehouses even specifically store chemicals. When correctly stored and disposed of, workers can operate around chemicals without coming to harm. Nonetheless, if chemicals are not stored or sealed properly, they can become airborne and enter the eyes. The end result can be serious chemical burns. 

Employers can counter the risk of eye injuries by providing the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Safety glasses or goggles can make a huge difference.
